Our goal is to share and celebrate the rich culture of Caribbean with Washington DC at this amazing event that also occurs in some of the most exceptional places in the world. Whether boasting about the breathtaking views of Trinidad and Tobago, or the spectacle and charm of Brazil, carnival is a celebration of rich and vibrant culture. These ideas of cultural pride and unity are the unifying themes displayed in the Washington, DC Caribbean Carnival. “DC Caribbean Carnival is one of the fastest growing carnivals in North America.” Established in 1993, this carnival has developed from 9 bands and approximately 150,000 spectators the first year to 25 bands and well over 300,000 spectators according to estimates by the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department last year. The celebration occurs in June, climaxing on the last weekend of the month with the Parade of Bands the Saturday, followed by a live “Concert in ‘de Savannah” at Banneker Park on Sunday. Each band presents this tradition through an explosion of color with a fantasy theme.
This Carnival band, Panisha, was founded in 2003 by Patrice Francis and Aisha Duplessis. Our vision of “Mas with Distinction” was molded from our prior cultural experiences in the DC Caribbean Carnival. “Mas with Distinction” is our idea that each costume designed portrays our unique signature. Every costume made carries Panisha’s distinct craftsmanship; the Panisha mas experience is exquisitely different from any other. In the past 5 years we portrayed Forest Rain (2003), Sapphire (2004), Colors of the Bayou (2005), Rhythms United (2006), and Vices and Virtues (2007). This year, we are portraying “A Brazilian Dream”. The design of this theme features snapshots of Brazil including the flag, dance, “carnaval”, and exquisite beaches that contribute to the make up of the country.
We believe that our partnership with our endorsers help create a genuine experience for all involved. By exposing our Caribbean audience to the beauties and wonderful culture of Brazil, not only will we enlighten them, but also bring together two of the world’s most amazing cultural events; Trinidad's carnival and Brazil's “carnaval”.
Our kick off event will take place at one of Washington DC’s landmarks, the Sweet Mango Café. This unique event will include exhibitions on capiorea and samba as well as a showcase of this year’s costumes.
The audience for the Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland Carnivals comprises of a wide demographic across geographic, gender, income, age, and racial origin. These attendees include Diplomats, members of Congress, professionals, families, visitors, and students all who enjoy celebrating and experiencing cultural events.
While Panisha’s patrons embrace Caribbean Culture away from home, our endorsers will the opportunity to expose their product to a more diverse clientele. As we begin to promote our events and launch our band
